Job Description:
Your Opportunity
Chewy is looking for a Software Engineer II to join our Observability team and help improve the reliability, performance, and visibility of our platforms! In this role, you will work closely with application, infrastructure, and product teams to design, build, and operate scalable observability solutions that support both customer-facing and internal services.
This is a hands-on engineering role with a strong emphasis on coding, system design fundamentals, and operational awareness.
What You’ll Do
Design, develop, and operate observability solutions across metrics, logging, and distributed tracing.
Build and support backend services at scale using Java and Node.js, contributing to observability frameworks and shared libraries.
Collaborate with Staff Engineers, Principal Engineers, and Product Managers to improve the performance and reliability of frontend applications built with React, Next.js, and TypeScript.
Implement and maintain telemetry pipelines using Open Telemetry Collector, Datadog, and Dynatrace, including custom metrics using StatsD and Prometheus.
Operate and enhance log ingestion and process pipelines using Fluent Bit and Fluentd.
Support CI/CD and release workflows using Jenkins and assist in operating applications running in Kubernetes-based environments.
Use monitoring, logging, and tracing data to proactively identify issues, resolve incidents, and drive performance optimizations.
Partner with Release Engineering, Automation, and Platform teams to identify operational requirements early in the application development lifecycle.
Contribute to automation and self-service tooling across observability and DevOps platforms.
Participate in the on-call rotation, providing Level 1–2 support and contributing to incident response and post-incident reviews.
What You’ll Need
Bachelor’s degree with 3 years of experience, or master's degree with 2 years of experience.
At least 2+ years of experience building and operating applications in a public cloud environment such as AWS (preferred) or GCP.
Hands-on coding experience with Java and Node.js, along with scripting or infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform.
Practical experience with observability concepts and tools, including metrics, logs, and distributed tracing.
Familiarity with Kubernetes-based application environments and modern CI/CD pipelines.
Experience working with or contributing to open-source software, including debugging, fixing, or submitting patches.
Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to organize work, troubleshoot effectively, and continuously learn.
Bonus (Nice to Have)
Deep experience with Datadog, Dynatrace, Splunk, or similar observability platforms.
Experience building reusable observability libraries or platform tooling.
Prior to exposure to large-scale distributed systems or high-traffic environments.
The base salary range for this role is $115,000 - $190,000.00.
